Apollo to premiere new Woolrich work

The Apollo Saxophone Quartet will be giving the world premiere of a new work by John Woolrich, commissioned by the Tunnell Trust for the quartet to celebrate the 500
th concert of the Trust’s funding and concert showcase scheme for young musicians. ASQ will be headlining the bill at a gala concert at Linlithgow Arts Guild on Saturday 12 May 2012, which will include the premiere of the new work, The Devil’s Horn.

John Woolrich is an important figure on the UK contemporary music scene. A highly successful composer and contemporary music programmer, he is constantly in demand for commissions and his works receive frequent performances and feature on many CDs. The composer will be writing for saxophone quartet for the first time, having written for a variety of other chamber music ensembles including wind quintet, string ensembles and an oboe quartet.

The Apollo Saxophone Quartet were winners in the very first year of the Tunnell Trust scheme 22 years ago, and are the only one of the original ensembles still to be performing today. The ASQ’s programme for the celebratory concert will also include the ever popular Kaval Sviri and Three Movements from saxophone quartets by Barbara Thompson.
